Writing from Life: A one-day workshop, Damson Hill Cottage, Swanmore

Saturday May 9th 2026

10:00am - 4:00pm

A real retreat experience at a woodland oasis nestled in the Hampshire countryside. A mix of tuition, guided exercises and quiet time to work on your writing either in the cosy ‘Woodland Workspace’, or outside amidst the trees with birdsong and (hopefully!) some late spring sunshine to inspire you.

The workshop price is £95 and includes all tuition, materials, and workbook.

Damson Hill Cottage also has a wood-fired sauna tucked in between the trees which we will have use of for an hour at the end of the workshop for an additional £15 per person.

The ‘Woodland workspace’ where we’ll be gathering for guided exercises and tuition

Who is this for? Anyone drawn to creative non-fiction—whether you're exploring memoir, travel writing, personal essays, local history, social commentary, or true stories shaped by lived experience. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity, a willingness to write, and a desire to find your voice. This edition of the workshop will particularly appeal to writers who enjoy being outdoors and working amidst nature.

What will I do on the day? In a supportive small group, we’ll explore how to turn memory, observation, and research into compelling narratives. Through practical exercises, guided writing time, and clear, engaging tuition you’ll gain tools to build strong story structures, create vivid scenes, and bring emotional depth and ethical awareness to your work. The day will also include guidance on editing and what to do with your material—whether you want to publish or simply write for yourself. We’ll also look at the role of research in personal and place-based writing, how to develop a writing routine, and how to navigate the emotional challenges of storytelling—including imposter syndrome and writing about real people and events.

What do I need to know about the venue? Damson Hill Cottage is a delightful oasis nestled in the woods of the Hampshire countryside. The ground is gently sloping and can be a little uneven under foot, so please let me know if you have mobility issues.

Do I need to bring anything? Notebooks, paper and pens will be provided, but if you prefer to write electronically, please do bring your own laptop or tablet. You will receive a 20% discount on the lunch menu on the day of the workshop. However, if you'd prefer to bring a packed lunch, please feel free to do so.

How much does it cost? £95 for the day’s tuition, and all materials, including resource pack to take away.

How many participants will there be? This is a small group workshop - limited to 8 participants at the most.

Will I have to share my writing with others? Only if you feel comfortable doing so. It’s entirely up to you!

How do I confirm my place? Return to the booking form page via the button below, complete the form and send your payment either by bank transfer or PayPal. Simple as that!
